Run Validator Node

Requirements #

• Minimum stake: 1,000,000 NEC
• Minimum hardware requirements: AWS EC2 m5.large with 8GB RAM, 2 vCPUs and at least 300GB of Amazon EBS General Purpose SSD (gp2) storage (or equivalent).
• We would recommend going with Ubuntu Server 20.04 LTS (64-bit).

Network Settings
Open up port 22 for SSH, as well as port 5050 for both TCP and UDP traffic.

Install Required Tools #

Now we are going to install Go.
First, install the required build tools:

Install Go #

# Install go
(validator)$ apt install -y golang-go

Building the source #

Building ncogearthchain requires both a Go (version 1.14 or later) and a C compiler. You can install them using your favourite package manager. Once the dependencies are installed, run

make ncogearthchain

The build output is build/ncogearthchain executable.

Running ncogearthchain #

Going through all the possible command line flags is out of scope here, but we’ve enumerated a few common parameter combos to get you up to speed quickly on how you can run your own ncogearthchain instance.

Launching a network #

Launching ncogearthchain for a network:

$ ncogearthchain --genesis /path/to/genesis.g

Configuration #

As an alternative to passing the numerous flags to the ncogearthchain binary, you can also pass a configuration file via:

$ ncogearthchain --config /path/to/your_config.toml

To get an idea how the file should look like you can use the dumpconfig subcommand to export your existing configuration:

$ ncogearthchain --your-favourite-flags dumpconfig

Starting up your node will look something like this:

Create a validator wallet #

The node running and syncing the network in your current console, so you need to open up a new console window, connect via SSH to the server and enter the following commands to create a wallet:

# Create validator wallet
(validator)$ ./ncogearthchain account new

After entering the command, you will get prompted to enter a password for the account (= wallet) — use a strong one! You can e.g. use a password manager to generate a 20+ digit password to secure your wallet. It will look something like this:

NEVER share your private key or keystore with anyone!
By the way: The wallet above is not a real wallet we use, it’s just for demonstration purposes only.

Fund your validator wallet #

The next step is to fund your validator wallet with enough NEC to become a validator. That means you need to have at least

1,000,000 NEC in the wallet you just created (send a little more to cover transaction fees).

After successfully adding NEC to your newly created wallet, you can register your validator via the SFC Smart Contract.

Make sure you wait for your node to be fully synced, otherwise your NEC will not show up in your wallet!

Create a new validator key #

We have to create validator private key to sign consensus messages with.

(validator)$ ./ncogearthchain validator new

Follow the prompts and supply the password, the output is as follows:

Create your validator via the SFC #

Open up the console where you entered the commands to create the validator wallet

# Attach to ncog console
(validator)$ ./ncogearthchain attach

By doing so, you will get a JavaScript console where you can directly interact with the node and e.g. send transactions (which you will do in a moment):

After initializing both variables, you can now interact with the network’s SFC. Enter the following command to check that everything works as expected:

If it looks like this, everything is OK (you should not get an error here):

Next, try to get your validatorID from the SFC using your previously generated validator wallet address:

This should return 0, as you are not registered as a validator yet:

Next, unlock your validator wallet to be able to execute the registration transaction (make sure to use the password you set before):

This will return “true” if unlocking the wallet was successful:

Next, send the createValidator transaction to register your validator (the value is the representation of the smallest NEC unit, so dividing it be 1e18 will result in 1,000,000 NEC. Alternatively, you can use web3.toWei(“1,000,000.0”, “nec”)). Use quotes for “YOUR_PUBKEY” and “YOUR_ADDRESS”:

Make sure to check your registration transaction (could take a few moments to be confirmed):

Finally, execute the following command again to check your validatorID:

It should now return something other than “0”.

If it not “0” Congrats, you are now a NCOGEarthChain validator!

To launch a validator, you have to use –validator.id and –validator.pubkey flags to enable events emitter.

$ ncogearthchain --nousb --validator.id YOUR_ID --validator.pubkey 0xYOUR_PUBKEY

ncogearthchain will prompt you for a password to decrypt your validator private key. Optionally, you can specify password with a file using –validator.password flag.

Participation in discovery
Optionally you can specify your public IP to straighten connectivity of the network. Ensure your TCP/UDP p2p port (5050 by default) isn’t blocked by your firewall.
